How to Play “Whipping Post” by Duane Allman & Dickey Betts

Hey, how’s it going this is Jon McLennan with Guitar Control, bringing you this video blog and if we’re talking about blues we can’t leave out Duane Allman and Dickey Betts they were two amazingly talented soulful blues guitar players and this song that we’re looking at right now is “Whipping Post”.

We’re going to start out with some hammer-on and pull-offs down here on the 5th fret and on the 3rd fret so the opening riff is starting on the 5th fret, I’m doing a pull-off and then a hammer-on and I just kind of continue that back and forth without Reap locking the notes, that’s kind of hard to keep it going it takes a little bit of practice it’s almost like a really good hammer-on exercise then you play these 2 notes 5th fret and the 3rd fret then you go up here to an A minor kind of pentatonic that’s just seven by seven, seven by seven so in my example and then on that last one I just kind of bend it a little bit to get that blue sea flavor that minor third is always kind of somewhere between the minor and the major and then you’ve got a chord progression like this A minor, A minor, Cm B minor, E, B minor. I like to keep that A base tone continuing through all those chords.
